During Nurse Anesthetist week 2008, the graduate nurse anesthesia students at Northeastern University participated in the "Possibilities of a Profession in Nursing" workshops.  These workshops are designed to promote nursing as a profession to local high school students who have an interest in health care.  Pictured: Meryn Boraski, SRNA displays a brain model during the workshop.

Boston College students and staff had an Anesthesia History Day which started with lunch at Cheers, included a visit to the Ether Monument and concluded with a lecture in the Ether Dome at MGH by Dr.  Edmund Eger (pictured center) who gave a personal history on anesthesia and autographed the students' books.

Members of the CRNA community including representatives from AANA, MANA and our MANA students turned out on October 12, 2007 in Chatham, MA to place a marker next to the grave of Agatha Hodgins, founder of AANA.

Schwartz Spearheads SRNAs Return to Mass General

Ann Schwartz, a CRNA at Massachusetts General Hospital, had a vision.  She wanted to see Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists doing clinicals again at MGH.  Nearly 50 years earlier, SRNAs had rotated through the renowned hospital as part of their nurse anesthesia training.

After much thought, a lot of reading and many conversations with many people in many organizations, Schwartz' vision became a reality.  In January 2004, SRNAs enrolled in Northeastern University's master's degree program in nurse anesthesia began rotating through MGH's Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care.

The one-month rotations provide senior SRNAs with a one-on-one learning experience with CRNA preceptors in the hospital's general surgical and neurosurgical services.  The students learn by practicing with knowledgeable, experienced CRNAs before graduating and beginning their own careers.

Here's how Schwartz describes the rotations:  "The first week is basically orientation.  By the second week, the students are feeling good.  The third week, they're doing really good.  The fourth week, they're AWESOME!"

Schwartz says the students are energizing the entire nursing, anesthesia and surgical staff with their thirst for learning.  "We're all asking each other, 'Does anyone know a good article on gas exchange?" for example.  We're all getting our own expertise."

The ultimate result, Schwartz says, is "cementing the camaraderie of the department's anesthesiologists and CRNAs.  We have common goals and common interests.  We're all working toward good patient care and good anesthesia education."

Schwartz serves as coordinator of the department's program.  The CRNA preceptors are Lisa Chyka, Judi Connell, Lynda Gillan, Sheila Kaiser, Ann Marie Nichols-Stout, Celeste Sanborn and Lisa Witham.

Janet Dewan, CRNA, Coordinator of Clinical Sites for Northeastern University's Nurse Anesthesia program, and Dr. Steve Alves, formerly director of that program, helped iron out the details of the relationship between Northeastern and MGH.
